Performs assigned duties under the direction of the Registered Professional Nurse. Demonstrates positive behavior and the ability to implement a plan of care. This position requires a multi skilled worker who will perform a variety of tasks related to the direct and indirect care of the antepartum and postpartum patient and in the maintenance of a clean and organized environment. The OB Technician is certified or grandfathered to work in the Surgical Suite.



Responsibilties:

1. Assists and supports nursing staff with provision of direct and indirect care to the patient. Follows the plan of care as directed by the RN


2. Orders and stocks all supplies for OR, PACU, Labor Rooms and related areas such as warmers, scrub sinks, OR ante-room. Maintains readiness of instruments and supplies for OR and vaginal deliveries.


3. Maintains sterile technique in the operative area including proper scrub, gown and glove techniques. Arranges the operative table appropriately. Passes instruments and maintains accurate sponge and instrument counts.


4. Assists surgeon in the operating room with procedures such as Cesarean Section, Hysterectomy, Dilation and Curettage, manual removal of placenta, and repair of cervical laceration.


5. Communicates patient information or potential problems to the nurse throughout the shift. Reports timely and accurate changes in the patient&s;s condition.


6. Makes rounds and responds to patient/family requests for assistance in a timely manner. Promptly answers call lights regardless of who is assigned to care for the patient.


7. Collaborates to ensure patient belongings are promptly stored and valuables are safe. Ensures all belongings are properly gathered, labeled with patient identification and are sent with the patient who is discharged, transferred or expired.


8. Exercises calm behavior and utilizes appropriate judgment while working in a team approach during emergency situations. Appropriately participates during crisis situations. Isolates and removes other patients and family members. Assists with and reassures patients and families. Stays with a patient in need.


9. Demonstrates appropriate use of and care for equipment and supplies. Follows procedures and ensures equipment is ready to use.


10. Provides for effective and safe patient/customer outcomes through practice, judgment and critical actions.: Adheres to current NJ Department of Health regulations, JCAHO and institutional policies and procedures, and promotes professional ethics/standards. Clinical practice accurately reflects Code of Ethics, the New Jersey Department of Health regulations.



Qualifications:

Education, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:


1. HS Diploma or Equivalent



Education, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Preferred:


1. One year of hospital PCT experience


2. Previous OB Tech or Surgical Tech experience in the acute care setting



Licenses and Certifications Required:


1. AHA Basic Health Care Life Support HCP Certification


2. Certified Surgical Technician or Certified OB Technician (or provides evidence of meeting the requirements of the NJ Surgical Technology Certification law in effect as of 12/21/2011)


Estimated Salary: $20 to $28 per hour based on qualifications.
